20091207_40This one gave his mother quite a scare.  Toddling is such a dangerous pastime, but he wasn’t even toddling when this mishap took place.  No, he was flat on the floor, whining and fussing, and jerked his head to show me he was mad and wanted more attention than I was giving him.  Only there was a bookcase in the way, and he smacked it hard.  I scooped him up instantly and the red line popped out instantly, and the goose egg burst forth instantly and this poor mother shed more tears than her injured babe.

It was alarming to see such a swell grow so quickly on his beautiful little head.  I soothed him and kept an eye on him for pupils dilating strangely and any other signs, and called the doctor.  Of course this happened on a Sunday, as all emergencies seem to take place outside of normal business hours.  By the time the on call doctor returned my call, he was calmed down and behaving normally, as evidenced by the photo above, and the doctor let me know the signs to look for over the next 24 hours, but that from the sounds of everything, he was fine.

20091207_61And so he is.

20091207_79I made him wear a helmet for the rest of the day, though.

20091207_68(Until he figured out how to remove it.)

Oh goodness, how can I keep saying he is so cute without ever feeling the words on the screen really sum up what I mean?

Mary Says:

He is very cute! but the egg is a scarey one and I don’t blame you for shedding tears!

Leslie Says:

I haven’t remembered this for years — but my mother and her mother before her used to run and grab a table knife and hold it blade flat on a new head bump for a bit — saying it reduced swelling. (My theory is probably it was cool and so soothing and yes, helpful with swelling, but who knows?) My mother is 93, so this is an OLD wive’s tale.

Oh that boy is so dang cute! I could just kiss those sweet cheeks all day!

So sorry to hear about his head bump. I know how you feel. A little while back, Darling Girl was working on climbing on the couch, but she fell off the arm and scraped her ear all up and bruised her back and face. I think I was more upset about it than she was! I tried to take photos, but she had things to do and places to go. No time to slow down so mom can take a silly ear scrape photo! Some days I think she needs to wear a helmet all the time!

In a side note, how does he feel about the straw cup in the photo? We just got some for DG and she keeps trying to tip it back like a sippy cup. We’re still working on it!
